This is a few weeks old now, but seeing how last night was the Oscars, and Avatar was up for some awards, it seems fitting to post today.

I would have held off redeeming my free baby chocobo avatar pet if I knew idiots would pay $25 plus for one. Final Fantasy XIII looks pretty cool and all but seriously???

My NXE Avatar Comparison
http://mademistakes.com/blog/my-nxe-avatar-comparison
With the release of the New Xbox Experience, I spent some time trying to craft an avatar that resembled me. I don’t think I pulled it off to the same degree of perfection as I did with my Mii and Rock Band characters. It’s in the ballpark but not quite there yet. Maybe it has something to do with the beard selection…
What I Like
Creating gamerpics with your avatar. While it’s not quite the same as using my own upload graphics or photos, it’s better than nothing. Overall quality and style of the avatars. Not too cartoony and not overly realistic. Being able to save your favorite outfits making it easier to change between them.
What I Don’t Like
Facial hair looks flat and painted on. Why not add some depth to it like in Rock Band? It would look OK if I had a stubble but I don’t. Need more clothing options. Microsoft announced that they’ll be releasing more options in the coming weeks. Cool. But what I’d like to see is the ability to customize the colors of each article of clothing and accessory. Again just copy what Rock Band did with their character creator.

NXE for Me [2]
http://mademistakes.com/blog/nxe-for-me
After being denied three times into the New Xbox Experience Preview Program, I finally got in last night when Microsoft let in the remaining batch of registered users. What a pleasant surprise it was turning on my Xbox 360 around 10pm EST to find that a console update was awaiting me.
The whole process went by pretty fast. Took a few minutes to download and then I was off. I spent about 15 minutes crafting my avatar and posing him just right for my Gamertag picture. The amount of choice is pretty good when compared to Nintendo’s Miis. You can’t position your facial features or change the sizes but you can dress your avatar…something the Miis lack.
The entire interface looks so much better and is way more responsive. I activated my Netflix account and gave streaming movies a go. Worked as advertised and looked on par with a DVD. I’ll have to add some HD content later and see how that looks.
Installed Gears of War 2 to my hard-drive to see how that whole process worked. Took about 5 minutes to copy over 6GB’s and then it was ready to launch off my hard-drive. I didn’t notice any load time gains, but man was my machine quiet. I probably won’t install games often since my 20GB hard-drive is tapped out of space, but it’s nice to know I have the option.
Very pleased with the update. Microsoft did a great job with it!
