I need to trust my gut more and stay away from film trailers that don’t spark. I expected The White Ribbon to be a snail up front and then come through with a surprise in the fourth. Especially coming from Michael Haneke, whose previous film Funny Games, won me over when its antagonists broke the fourth wall. Got none of that creativity in this plot. Just something that looked fine in black and white… and if you like to read.
